I'm currently restoring the gelcoat on 2 - 16s. Both are the same color yellow. The hulls on the 84 weigh less, and I found out 1 reason why. The 84 has 1/2 the gelcoat compared to the 82, maybe even less than that. I would suppose they also shed weight on the amount of epoxy between the deck and hull. Older boats I've cut up seemed to have an excess amount of that.

Actually... the 84 is light in glass layup as well. THe class rules changed that year and we started making the boat at 320 lbs rather than 340. Should have a red color in the glue seam.

my 84 appears to have black epoxy at the seam. And the 85 I had also appeared black.

It has been my understanding that H16s that were built from 1984-1986 were "redlines". My boat was built in July of 1984 and as you can see, is a "redline". Maybe Mr.Miller can shed some light as to why some are "reds" and some are not?

They probably used whatever they happened to have on hand, I believe my 84 was built in Feb. I have similar sails to Marty's which on the sail chart show mine as an 84 offering. Marty's sails are the 85 version. The 84 sails have another panel of yellow below the prism.
I asked my dealer when they switch to the modern 3 hole mast tang. His reply was they probably used what was on hand at the time so there's no way of telling. I have a 78 mast that had the old single hole tang and by 79 it was switched to the 3 hole. But I swear I had another 78 mast that had the 3 hole tang.

'84 Nationals has the blue stripes at the bottom, '85 Nationals/Sunburst has the blue stripes on top. My sails are 1984 Nationals. ImageImageImage

Well I didn't notice they flipped the prism stripes for 85. Still my sails have the extra yellow panel below like they are shown for 84. There are so many variation on the sails that the chart doesn't show them all. I just got a set of sails with the Carumba colors in a different order with yellow panels top and bottom and a yellow jib.

If you look again at my sails, you will notice the top panel is yellow. Kind of hard to see since the rest of the sail is yellow. The 3rd batten from the bottom separates the last panel from the rest of the sail, then the sail numbers are above that. In all, there are 6 panels that make up the "prism".

The prism stripes are the same whether it's a yellow sail or a white sail. On my 84 sail there are 2 full panels of yellow below the prism stripes. So the bottom of the prism stripes start at the 2nd batten from the bottom. This is shown on the color chart for 84. Each panel being a section between battens, or 9 panels for the main. The stripes are a print and take up 2 panels. Marty, your sail has a cleaner look as the top yellow stripe is square to the sail. When you raise the prism up a panel the top yellow stripe gets cut off at an angle. It's probably why there is a variation on these. So there's an early version and a later version. My sail number is in the 80,000 area, where as your's is 90,000 something.
