I picked it up! I was going through the inventory of extra parts. The only thing I can't figure out is what this is in the picture. Anyone know what this is for? I'm excited to get it rigged for the first time tomorrow.

The device in you post is a harness to allow you to hike out on the trapeze wire. It is missing the rope to lace it and the metal plate with a hook which gets laced into it.

Yeah, that's a trap seat.
I wouldn't OCD over the serial number. When you're talking a 34-ish year old boat, as long as the state accepts the title, you're good.
Looks like a pretty clean boat, and for a grand or less, a nice deal! Sail the heck out of it!

Hey thanks for the info. I guessed that's what it was but it makes sense now that I know it's missing parts. Would this be the missing part?

If I were to buy it would it complete the harness(not including rope and clip)? What are peoples thoughts on this harness. I had a chance to rig it today and replace the aft trampoline lacing. I have some new jib and main halyard rigging on the way. In the rigging bag the seller gave to me I found out there was an original jib sheet in there that was just a little crusty. I put it in a bucket of soapy water and it came out clean(relatively) and soft. I have no idea why that was swapped out for some really poor quality line. I look forward to giving it a wash and wax and fixing some stitches in the sail. On a side note it may be a silly thing to do but I was wondering if anyone has ever polished the corner castings to add a little flash to the boat. Yeah corrosion would make upkeep a pain esp. in briny water but it might look neat.

I’m not sure if that’s the exact right harness hook, but it could probably be made to work.

That being said, those old harnesses were extremely uncomfortable by today’s standards (like a cheap hotel if you know what I mean...).

The link you gave to ebay shows a harness hook that appears to be bent at about a 45 deg angle. I searched quite a bit to find a picture of the old style harness I did find one that is probably from this site's archives. The metal plate has 6 holes in it, not 4, and the hook is straight down. My daughter has my boat and harnesses so I couldn't just go look at it. The old style harnesses are a little uncomfortable so there were several different ones created that spread the pull wider and addressed the problem of the crotch area. Since a lot of people switched to newer designs, there should be some surplus harnesses around.

I got this one. I saw another one like it that had some spring steal tab riveted from the plate. Low money for getting to get out on the trap and see what it feels like. Honestly I never really put together a bucket list but if I had one this would be on it. I'm going to see this one will work and if not I'll try to modify it with my TIG welder.

I sent you an email with a photo of the harness with hook and lacing. Did you receive it? If not I can send it again.

If you did polish up the corners you could get them clear anodized. That would give them the same corrosion protection as new.

There is a plating company near me that will do small lots for a reasonable price, maybe there is one near you.
