I'm towing my 16 with a 2015 Subaru Outback H4 2.5 litre (US edition). No problem other than a drop in gas milage from 32mpg to 22mpg.

H6 is plenty powerful. I see people tow H16s all the time with this car.

The Subara 6 cylinder is more than enough to pull an H16. It's the gearing and transmission that really come into play when towing.

The Subaru owners manual or car specs should spell out what the towing capacity for that car are.

I agree with the above - I can’t envision any 6 cylinder car that wouldn’t be capable of towing a Hobie 16. Many Hobies have been successfully towed by sub-100 HP four cylinder vehicles. Check the owner’s manual for the tow capacity, but you would basically be looking at 1,000 Lbs or less for boat, trailer, and gear, which almost any car can handle. If you have an automatic transmission, the manufacturer may recommend installing a transmission cooler.

Yes, the H4 Outback towing capacity is 2,700lb.

I've also got a F150, and that tows the boat and trailer as if nothing is there.

Thanks everyone I should of clarified that I live at 8800 feet and probably the most strain will be getting out of the mountains and to the beach. But feel confident and comfortable with the advice given.

I drive an Audi a4 with the 1.8L Turbo 4 Cylinder and it tows it no problem.

Last fleet sail with a variety of towing vehicles. Two outbacks, a crown victoria (Mercury Grand Marquis) and a chevy

If yours is an automatic transmission, may I suggest that you leave it in 3rd gear (not overdrive).
(Assuming a 4 speed transmission).

The fuel consumption will be about the same, and you will not suffer from potential lock up problems.

Back in '86, I pulled my Hobie 16 with a VW rabbit 1.8 liter without a problem even on hilly roads........... :)

I had to tie large pcs. of fire wood to the top of my front bumper to get enough traction to pull it out of my old storage lot....

Towing at the fifty five mile an hour rate is wise.

I towed my H16 yesterday with my Nissan Quest S 3.5, 60-65 mph highway, no problems whatsoever. ImageImage

I used to pull my H16 with a Subaru XT 4 cylinder. Was more than enough power.
