Hello all.

I am new here. First post.

After 15 years during which it remained stored, unused, I am assembling my HC 16. To my surprise, the aluminum pivot pins of the rudders had become one thing with the castings, and I had to saw the pins to remove the castings.

Now I am thinking of replacing the pins with stainless steel pivot pins, but I am afraid of galvanic corrosion. Although the boat would be in the water only when used, it remains outdoors in a very humid area, often foggy in winter (i. e. everything gets wet, and remains wet for days and days).

So my question: is it a good idea to use stainless steel pivot pins to prevent what happened to the aluminum pins that I had to saw from happening again, or would the steel cause more problems?

Thank you very much,

I installed aluminum pins in my 14 this year. I only have sailed in fresh water so far so corrosion is minimal.

I would think if you removed the pins at least once a season and rinsed them with fresh water you wouldn't have a problem with the aluminum pins.

Stainless pins. They will never bend, corrode, or break. Install the black, oversized nylon rudder pin bushings in the rudder castings (you may need to drill out the castings). The bushings will provide a very secure, slop free connection for the rudder pin and provide isolation to prevent galvanic corrosion between the pin and casting.

I use fiberglass, as they are cheaper than the aluminum. They'll break off before you damage a rudder or transom.

Fiberglass (and aluminum to a slightly lesser extent) will also snap off unexpectedly under load - leaving you with one or zero rudders attached to your transom and a challenging situation to get home from.

If you use something other than stainless, be sure to inspect the pins often for wear and carry a spare set of pins on the boat so that when one breaks, you can hopefully reattach the rudder and be able to sail the boat home.

SRM is 110% correct.
Two years ago, racing downwind in the 2nd leg in heavy wind under spinaker, the home made rudder pins (Home Depot 3/8" aluminum) bent and deformed....yikes!
We were lucky to finish the race, we had to abandon the 2nd race, then we crept home under one rudder. That was not fun.
Spend the $ and get stainless and you won't have to worry.
