Am a relatively new, older ('83) H16 owner with mainsheet questions. Setup that came with my boat appears to be 6:1 but instead of using 3-sheave upper and lower blocks has a 3-sheave lower ratchet block (Harken, but don't recall model number) and upper blocks are single sheave and a double sheave pair suspended from two separate boom bails about 6" apart. All current hardware looks to be in good shape so no pressing need to replace but seems a bit unwieldy and wondering if might be worth switching out the upper block pair with a Harken 2640 to reconfigure to what looks like a more modern (better?) setup.

Along with this have questions about best position for position of upper block on the boom.

Anyone know reason why earlier setup would have been configured with the double upper block, double bail method?

Thanks

Sounds to me like someone did a 6:1 upgraded lower but kept the original upper blocks. The original set up had 2 blocks that each went to one of those bails. If it was me I would do a search for 6:1 upgrade. There have been a number of write ups on how to combine the uppers to end up with a 3 pulley upper from the original seaway blocks. Then you could just attach to one of the bails on the boom. Probably the boom furthest aft.
