Upgrading From 5:1 to 6:1

Post subject:  Upgrading From 5:1 to 6:1
Okay so I am upgrading to a low profile 6:1 mainsheet set up on my H16. My boom has the two boom bails and I would like to know which bail should I hang the upper blocks from? I've seen videos where the upper blocks were hanging from either, so I'd like to know for sure which one I should use. Thanks for any help in answering my questions and I am including pics of the old set up and what i have for the new. ImageImageImageImageImage

Nice looking set-up.
Personally I like to find my own path so I would try them both and see if there is much if any difference. The spacing is not that far apart so I can't imagine it would make that much difference.

Thanks for the response. I bought the blocks used and they had the initials of the previous owner engraved in the stainless parts of both blocks and I wanted to remove them. A friend of mine thought he could do it so he took the upper block and tried, but whatever he used really boogered up the stainless on one side so I painted it with some satin black as you see, and gave up on removing the initials from the lower block, definitely don't want to mess it up.
You are right, there isn't much difference in the positions of those boom bails but I think I will hang the upper from the one that is most aft.

I would use the forward mounting location, and here is why. When you are racing upwind and want the sails flat, you have the traveler in and block to block. Using the rear mount would be pulling the boom forward causing unwanted mast rotation. Downwind you have the traveler out further, so it doesn't matter as much.

Gotcha, I took everything off when I put the sail back in its bag. When I reconnect everything, I will put it on the forward bale.

Looks like a sweet set-up.
I would add a retention wire to that quick pin.

I hate losing pieces parts when rigging on the beach!

I like the bright sails too, Pretty sure we have the same ones

I have two bail booms on one of my booms with 6:1 blocks. I was hoping that someone knowledgeable would post because all I've got is some gut feelings. I use the forward bail boom when the wind is on the lighter side, because it feels like I can get the boom tighter to the blocks When the breeze is stronger, then I use the aft bail boom. I feel that I lose some power because I can't get the rig as tight, but it's on days when I want to get rid of some power.

As I said, this is all gut feeling and I'm not sure that there's enough difference in the positions to matter.

Hobie Marty, I just updated my signature, I had it listed as '81 nationals but I actually have '81 Boomer nationals. Your sails are a little different than mine but I like them too.

I recently added a third hanger about 1/2 way between the existing two hangers with the bottom of the hanger angled forward about 13° as recommended by Joe Bennett of Total Joyrider. This new hanger location makes it a lot easier to uncleat the mainsheet when block to block whether the traveler is centered or fully out. If I could only choose between the two existing 5:1 hangers when upgrading to a 6:1, I would use the front hanger since it doesn't jamb the boom's gooseneck into the mast as much and it provides a more uniform angle for releasing/cleating the main sheet.

If you are going to use some type of quick release shackle, I would recommend putting it between the boom's hanger and the top block. This way you can release the main sheet 6:1 from the boom when you come ashore very easily. I use a snap shackle there and just a clevis pin where the lower block connects to the traveler. This will allow you to pull the boom closer to the cross beam when tight sheeted.

Where the end of the main sheet connects to the lower block, I don't tie the sheet to the eye strap, but instead feed the sheet thru the eye strap (away from the block) and then tie a knot on the end of the main sheet so it can't pull thru the eye strap.
