Post subject:  Reef Sail: H16 FAQ missing manual page

Hi,
I'm a new H16 (1981) owner and I'm looking for instructions on reefing the main sail. I read a few of this forum's threads, but I would also like to read the H16 manual's instructions. The manual posted in the FAQ (H16 Owners Manual: http://static.hobiecat.com/digital_asse ... Manual.pdf) seems to be missing that page. It refers to page 24 for reefing the sail, but p. 24 is about unrelated safety information, and the following page is missing/blank.

Did the original manual have reefing instructions, and if so, does anyone have a copy to share? If not, are there some other graphic instruction guides you could point me to?

Thanks!

First question that needs to be answered- does your mast have a comptip or is it all-aluminum, and does your sail have reef points?

Hobie did away with the reefing feature on the 16 in the mid-1980’s when they introduced the comptip mast. This is likely why that information has been deleted from the manual. If your mast has a comptip, then you can’t reef.

If you have an all aluminum mast and your sail has reef points, then you can reef and the procedure is pretty straight forward and can probably be explained on the forum.

Lower / raise the sail to the reefing point on the halyard. Use two short lines to tie the larger grommets in the sail to the forward / luff end of the boom / gooseneck and aft / leech end around the boom. Tie the outhaul to the aft grommet and outhaul tightly. Use three short lengths of line or even bungee to run through the three grommets mid-sail just to hold this excess sail material to the boom. Do not allow sail tension to ride on these three grommets, they are not well supported and will tear. The loads have to be at luff and leech ends.

The mast is all aluminum.

The sail appears to have reef points/grommets (5 holes: 3 in a line and 2 offset at the edges).
The thread i was reading suggested reefing at the edge grommets

If anyone else is looking for these manual pages, hrtsailor mentions them in this thread:

https://www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=51456

If hrtsailor is still active in the forum, maybe we could post those pages in the FAQ.

I think this thread is wrapped up. Sorry, no manual page, but I was pointed to a youtube video that covers the subject well:
