I tow my H16 behind a full size Chevy Express van. The front mast support is a two-piece unit that is extended to its maximum height but, due to the height of my van, the mast isn't high enough to go over the top of the van. I've been thinking about fabricating an extension so I can get the mast over the top of the van and, thus, have more of the weight evenly distributed and not have as much hanging off the back of the boat. Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks! Nick |

A couple of questions, is the rear of your mast supported at all, or does it sit on the rear edge of the boat?. When you have the boat hooked up to your van, is the trailer sitting level? How does your front support extend? This could be very helpful in giving you some help with this. Could you also possibly provide any pictures so we can get a better idea of what you are working with? I know that I have towed my 16 with a mini van and a F150 with a cap on it with no problems to speak of, the mast clears the roof on both of them. Mark Colby 1973 H16 |

Thanks for the reply, Mark! To answer your questions: 1) The mast rests on a mast support hooked to the rear beam of the boat. 2) Yes, the trailer is level when attached to the van. 3) The front mast support is a two piece, metal extension support that uses bolts to set the height. It is currently at its highest level and brings the mast to about 6 inches below the top of the van. I'll try to post a pic later today. Thanks again! Nick |

Move the mast support farther back. Just a little will dramatically change the angle and should provide enough clearance 9 times out of 10 this will help. Let me know if you have any questions. Also where it is supported on the rear cross bar how high does it stick up? You may need to get another type of cradled to lower that back end a bit. Hobie had a nice on that is held on with bungi and is made to fit on the H16 rear cross bar. Part number 3175 and is on page 45 of your Hobie Parts and Accessories catalog. Nick, where are you in Michigan, I am in the Jackson area and willing to come over and help you with your project. Thanks for the answers to the questions, that does help out a lot. Is your front mast support such that it can be moved further back? I know the one on my trailor is welded into postion and cannot be moved at all, and it does not have a height adjustment to it. MarK; I'm located in Lansing. Checked the trailer and it does appear to have the type of support that can be moved back. When the weather gets warmer, I'll play around with it and see if I can get the height I need. Thanks for the offer of help! I'll definitely take you up on that if need be. Perhaps we can get together some time and kick back some cold ones while discussing sailing? Or better yet, do some sailing (when the weather gets warmer, of course)! Cheers, Nick |

Just a 1/2 hour away... Just an FYI, I am also in the process of trying to rebuild a Hobie fleet down here in Jackson, possibly on Clark Lake or Michigan Center Lake... I just recently bought a hobie 16 and have been looking for someone to sail with, I am in the Jackson area. Now keep in mind I am VERY new to Hobie sailing.
