Im familiar with Lost titles for cars but have never dealt with boats before.

So i bought a H16 from a guy last weekend and he told me that since it was only a 16' it did not have or require a title ? Im not sure if its because of the year or the size ? Is there any truth to this ? |

What I think he's telling you is that he can't find it or doesn't remember getting one. Like me, he probably bought the boat back when hull numbers weren't required. I put my title/MSO someplace safe, but couldn't find it when I sold the boat. But yes, the 16 should have a title or MSO. TPWD gets 6.5% on the sale of any boat. And any sailboat 14' and up needs hull numbers now. It used to be 18', then went to 16' and now to where it is. You will have to fill out paperwork to get your registration properly submitted. And depending on the people at your TPWD office, they treat you like you stole it. The lady at the TPWD office near me is mean as a snake. So get your ducks in a row. could be that it does not have a motor and it's under a certian legenth. thats what I'm lead to believe here in delaware anyway. |

In Texas, the Hobie 16 needs hull numbers. To get hull numbers, you need a title/MSO. Trust me... Brian C |

You will probably need to visit your local TPWD office to get a complete list of needed forms. Since we're a dealer, we deal mostly in new boats. We'll only represent a used boat when it has all the proper paperwork. So personally, I've never had to jump through the hoops. I bought my h16 with no title as well... I filled out all the information on the registration forms here in Wisconsin and said that the previous owner did not have a title or lost it.. I gave them his name and number and that matched up with the previous registrations and they sent me a new title and all my registration information with only a phone call to verify everything. |

One correction to that thread... There were titles before 1987. I had one for my '86 H17. But yes... TPWD will treat you like you stole it. And I don't understand why. Maybe because Texas is behind only Florida in the number of registered boats (or so it used to be). The county tax office people are totally different. If you don't have an MSO for the trailer, just register it as a homemade. In fact, they seem to prefer it that way. Brian C |
