After years of sailing other cats with furling Jib my Hobie 16s battened Jib is a real pain in the 'A' in the often gusty 25 knot winds - especially when she's bouncing around on the beach. Ant suggestions??

Hobie lists a kit to put a furling jib on a 16 in their catalog- you either recut your jib or buy a furling one. I don't have any experience with it, though. I often sail my 16 without the jib in higher winds- it's kind of a pain to tack, and depowers the boat signifigantly. I think that a furling jib would probably give you less sail area, and might affect pointing ability somewhat. I also have a 14t, and relative to the 16 it appears to have less jib and not point as well.

The full batten jib is much larger than one you can furl, but in higher winds you don't need that much sail. Certainly is easier on the beach when you can roll it up. As far as the boat bouncing around on the beach, don't forget to release your downhaul. That takes care of most of the bouncing, but doesn't help the jib from flapping all over the place. I think the furling jib is a good choice, but keep the original for lighter days! Way more power down wind.
