Proper Trap Setup

Eager to get my boat on the water, as soon as warm weather hits in May, what else do I need to buy to get out on the trap.

Currently, my boat only has the wires and some plastic handles that are then attatched to a shock cord. I'm short, about 5'4" and 150 lbs, so do I need to adjust the length?

take a look at these diagrams. they should show you what you need. the set up you have isn't correct. The top would shackle to the mast tang. The shackle actually uses 2 holes and looks upside down. I will see if I can get a picture when I get back in town.

Or i could do that. Perhaps I'll drive over to the dealer at lunch and see if they have any hobies sitting outside.

If you have a dealer within driving distance that is where you should be doing business! They will/should know how to set up a trap, even if one's not on display they should be able to draw you a diagram. Or give them a call and see if they have time to look over the boat with you, and even help you set up the traps.

You could also ask Santa for a Igloo six pack cooler packed with some nice imports to fit in that dandy holder by your dolphin striker. There is a Hobie dealer in Blue Ash that could take care of you, Strictly Sail, they have some stuff in stock. You might save a nickel or two at murrays, but feed the brand, it will come back to you, sorta like the site your on right now. It's also someplace to go after twisting one up on a snowy Saturday afternoon.

I bought 4 adjustable on the fly trap lines and found that it was a little overkill. In hind sight, I probably would have only gotten 2 on the fly adjustable ones and keep the the other two pretty simple. I say that just because: 1) I really don't adjust on the wire very often. 2) they aren't cheap. I would definately take Brad's advice on the nicer rings over the bones

Buzzman, I have the adjustable trap set-up as well. After using them for a while I finally figured that mine aren't set up right, but that's how they came on the boat when I got it. (I've only started trapping earlier this year) Do you ever have problems with the adjustable rope coming out of the jam cleat? From the diagrams it looks like you have to cleat them upwards, as I do on mine. I've managed to uncleat mine accidentaly while on the wire, it's no fun. Do you tie yours off or anything after you have set it?

I think ultimately I'm going to de-grade my trap set up to just using rope locks, I sailed on someboady elses boat with the old-school set up and I liked it a little more, simple. But I think I"ll hang on to a set of the adjusatables, and set them up right to use when I take out other people.

I have found that any time it slipped it was a result of either 1) a smaller diameter rope than I should be using. or 2) a piece of crap rope. I weigh 220 and once they are set, they are set, which is the way it should be. Technically, they should hold probably quadruple my weight. I really only have two positions that I like, and that is 1) really low to be able to stand her up and really enjoy it, as opposed to feeling like I'm going to be pushed into the main (which is no way to flip over). 2) Be much higher because of high chop or swells, which is really hard to hot dog high in, so your never really that high and I'm talking stall high.
