Post subject:  Halyard problems

Having problems with the jib halyard on my hobie 16.It seems good untill I raise the jib ,then it developes a twist at the top. When I rigged the shrouds and forstay I put the shackle through the middle hole in the mast tang and put the trap line shackle through the bottom hole in the mast tang.could this cause a problem?my main halyard the wire part of it has developed a kink in it,which makes it hard to keep it against the mast when pulled tight. Also my boat seems to make quite a few creeking noises when being sailed in good wind is this normal.Any advice would be appreciated

The main halyard kink may just provide something for the jib battens to catch on as you tack. The set-up of the tang should be with a shackle that has the pin end secured through the top hole with the curved end passing through the next hole down. You will need to load trapeze wires for each side seperately as you pass that curved portion through the tang.

Your shrouds and forestay should attach to a shackle which is put through the bottom hole in the tang. This set-up will accomplish one thing in particular: it will allow you mast to be raked further back, giving you better pointing ability. I am not certain of your jib halyard situation. Are you still able to raise your jib to the point that you have signficant slack in your forestay? That is all you are trying to achieve. Hope it helps. See you at Catfight, if not earlier.:D

The standard tang has three holes. The main shackle that carries the shrouds and forestay use the lower hole on the tang. These hang from a 5/16" shackle. The 1/4" shackle for the trapeze wires hangs from the top hole. The "hoop" or bell of the shackle passes through the larger/center hole.

Be sure that the jib halyard wire is routed cleanly. Shouldn't be another cause there.

Also, after hoisting the main, I hook the halyard at the top... then bring the halyard out, aft and around the starboard shroud. I then loop the line under the downhaul cleat and only then do I tie it off on the starboard mast cleat. Pull enough tension to keep the kinks out. That will keep it well clear of the jib while tacking.
