Has anyone ever used a ratchet strap to pull the crossbars/sidebars inward a bit in order to tighten the tramp and if so what is the procedure for this? One, two staps? I assume that you wrap the strap around the crossbars and attach the strap back to itself?

Use the mainsheet system. Lay the blocks and line on the tramp "unsheeted" from side to side bar... in the center. Add a line to the base of the blocks that can reach around the sidebar, under the tramp and meet the top block. Tie off. Pad the side bars with some cardboard where the line goes around the sidebars. Sheet the system to bend the sidebars in by over 1". We sheet till the tramp gets a little pucker shape along the sidebar. Cleat the blocks and tighten the tramp using moderate tension. Using the vise grips, dowell or just holding the line at each grommet as you go. Tension the aft lace last and then release the block set.

We use this system and get over 1-2 inches of prebend in the bars for over 1 inch after releasing.

Worst loads on a grommet are during tensioning each one... this saves effort and grommets.

I use a ratchet strap. It is an easy setup.

I made a 10" wide by 12" tall Tee out of 1 1/2" PVC pipe and a 1 1/2" PVC socket Tee with a slot cut across the base of the tee. I place the slotted part of this tool on the tramp line (starting at one end of each line) and then twist the tee handle to put tension on the line and then clamp the line/grommet with a vise grip. I then move the tee and tighten the next section before moving the vice grip. One person can easily do this for the whole tramp.

Hmmm, I have seen a "T" shaped tool at our cabin, it is metal and has a slot in the end of it. I think it was made to turn a water cut off valve or something, but it sounds just like you have described. I am going to the cabin Saturday and I will get it!!!

I just use my hands. You get a lot of mechanical advantage by pulling perpendicular to the length of a line. Run the line through all the grommets. Use one hand to hold the line past the turn of the next grommet. Pull the line perpendicular, in the middle of the span before the grommet where you are holding the line at the next grommet turn. Take up the slack quickly, as you release the sideways pull. It's not hard to hold a lot of tension at a 180 degree turn in a grommet. Go down the line the same way.

With a little practice, you can easily put too much tension on a tramp like this, and bow the sides in too much.

I have assembled hundreds of 16's though.

One more quick question. I'm sure it's best to have the boat off the trailer and on level ground when tightening the trampoline, but can the mast be up, or is it best to have it down for this task, or does it not matter at all?

The only issue with having the mast up is that the shroud might get in your way a little bit when tightening the center lacings. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.
