Does anybody have any idea of how many special edition Hobie 16's were made that year. I have sail numbers 153. Curios to know how many more are there. Chris

Bought the whole boat that is. Trailer, sails, all gear, very nice rig...now if I can only learn to tack the thing!

the trick is to roll tack it. When you come through the wind blow the mainsheet but leave the jib cleated to backwind it. Also leave the main traveler cleated. This will bring the hulls across. Also, stay on the windward (now leeward) side for a little longer until you feel the boat flip over. Watch your main battens. When you see they flip over onto the new tack side, bring the jib across and you are through. It all takes practice but you will get it down

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for the same information that Chris asked about three years ago. I'd like to find out how many Stars & Stripes sails were released, and what the number range was.

Can anyone help?

Regards,
Rich

By the way, in trying to find pictures and other information on the Stars & Stripes boats, I noticed that the boat with sail number 150 (that Rex mentioned above) is back on Craigslist.

I own a 1989 Star and Stripes 21SE Hobie that I purchased new. It did come with a nice color brochure that showed the 16 and 18 too. I will try to find it and post a copy. :D

We have a set of Spirit of 76 Sails, of the three sets we have they are without a doubt our favorite! We always get at least one person who stops to tell us how awesome they are, not to mention our friends can find us easily on the water. Unfortunately they're started to get somewhat tattered and well used. We've talked of getting new ones made but are afraid to ask what it would cost to replace them with the same style.

Probably not a lot. That was the year that sales really fell off, and many dealers stopped trying to sell small sailboats. By then, jetski sales had really taken off because their top speed went up a Lot then, and a lot of the people who would have bought a Hobie Cat bought jetkis. Carlton Tucker raced a Stars and Strikes 21 on the Prosail circuit, and that was the only one I ever saw of any model. Most of the dealers were like me, and only stocked white hulled boats.
