Hi, I am seriously interested in purchasing the Outback 2019. My concern is I surf launch in some challenging locations and I have to time it right. There will be times where I will be in the surf waiting for the window to go out. During that time, the surf pushes from multiple directions which will cause the kayak to go side to side. When I looked at one at my kayak shop, the rudder looks very thin and could be subject to breaking. How easy is the replacement of this rudder? How much do they cost and how hard is it to change them?

The rudder is meant to withstand some bending and twisting, and won't have a problem with temporary distortion. It's not recommended to store the kayak ever with the rudder deformed, otherwise it will slowly take that shape.

The rudder can be replaced very easily on this kayak, and will be affordable. Maybe Matt can chime in on availability timeline?

I would be very interested in the cost and steps to change the rudder. It still would suck to have it broken and I have made it through some surf to find out I can’t turn. Love to see a video with someone launching in sketchy surf.

Is there a sailing rudder option for the 2019?

I believe th 2019 rudder is rather large already.

My Outback sat on the rudder for 4 straight days before I noticed it. It was bent 45 degrees and wouldn’t move. It rebounded and is dead straight now. Just saying it’s pretty durable.

Surf launch with the rudder retracted.

It is still exposed. You will see that is the reason for the new part for loading.

So far it looks like i will be keeping my 2016 Outback.

The loading apparatus is to protect it from the concrete. Hopefully when you surf launch you will be on top of the water.
