I had my first try paddle boarding on the lynx yesterday. I tell folks this is a 4 in one kayak. You can configure it as a default Kayak, or a Fishing Kayak, or Sailing Kayak and a Paddle boarding kayak. The 3 first, totally awesome experience. The paddle boarding, hmm...not so much, as I had to switch every 2 strokes from left to right to prevent me from spinning in a circle or turning on a dime. I bought an actual SUP paddle and a foot leash to make it a paddle board. That being said, to mitigate this "spin" a fin might work. I thought of using the rudder but no where to attach the handle and cumbersome. So has anyone come up with a fin design to attach to the lynx to improve the paddle board experience? I'm going design my own prototype to use the existing rudder (red pin) mount and see if having a fin will track me straight and counter the rotational force around the center of the SUP. |

I added a fin using an NRS replacement fin box. https://www.nrs.com/nrs-fin-replacement-plate/psys After cutting off the vinyl border I mounted the box directly to the underside of the power-pole insert bracket using small stainless screws. This avoided any permanent changes to the Lynx hull, and seems to work fine. Here's a picture: |

Your fin tail design using the power pole route looks to be more ideal. I may go that route as well. My prototype rudder fin failed miserably. Didn't do jack squat to counter react the rotation forces. It was too flexible...and too short. Does look good though conceptually.

Nice setup. BC-lynx. How did it hold up. It seems like you got a larger fin. Is that an NRS fin? Also, what is the stripping that you have on the underside to protect the hull? Does it seem to hold on well? Thanks. |

Does it seem to hold on well? Thanks. Ahh...totally forgot about the forum. Sorry for the late reply. I was enjoying my lynx too much. So yes, my fin is just some el-chepo amazon $25 removable fin. I finally went paddle boarding at a lake resort 2 weeks ago What a difference with the fin. It actually paddled like an actual SUP. So, adding a cheap removable fin really makes paddle boarding the lynx enjoyable. The over rotation is well mitigated. Since I was at a lake resort, I was constantly changing my lynx configuration from fishing to paddle boarding to sailing and people were asking me what kind of strange "vessel" I had? In the morning they see me paddle boarding. Later in the afternoon, they see me sailing and then in the evening its a fishing boat. And to top it off I have the TPP installed and they were wondering how I was moving around without paddling or using my my mirage drive. I felt like a hobie product specialist there. lol...So all in all, if you want a to make your lynx a reasonable paddle board, just add a removable fin. Just use marine shoe goop for the base and you're good to go. As for the black striping, it's car side molding strips for protection from amazon. it's been holding up well and it gives good protection to the bottom. |
