Post subject:  removing boomlet for sail replacement

jUst got a new sail. Looks like I need to remove and replace a rivet to remove and reattach the boomlet.(Harkness)

It's a funny looking rivet and I can't figure out how I'd get in there with any kind of riveting tool after I've put the new sail in there.

am I missing something here?

thanks

When I replaced my sail, I drilled out the rivet on the forward endcap of the boomlet, pulled off the endcap and removed the old sail. Then I used a dremel to route out the grove in the endcap so the bolt rope (and not just the sail) would pass through. To reattach the endcap, I used a tap to thread the rivet hole in the endcap and attached it to the boomlet with a SS flathead bolt. Now I can change out the mainsail whenever I wish without tools.

There was a thread on this a while ago with pictures on how to put the boomlet on a new sail.

Note: A new 17 / Sport sail is not compatible with the older "Harken" boomlet. You would need to get the current boomlet. It is longer and has the proper attachment hardware.
