I seem to be going through rudder cams faster than what would seem normal. I sail about 30 - 40 days/season in medium breeze to windy conditions and have to replace my rudder cams at least every other season. The top of the cams get streached out allowing the rudders to pop up when in chop and/or adding a significant amount of weather helm when pointing.

Grease, Lubrication between the cam and plunger. If dry and too tight, you damage the cam. |

Another approach some of use is to cut off the top end of the cam, about 3/8 inches. With this modification you can lock down the rudder with the cam in either position. This is helpful when racing. Caleb Tarleton |

As long as the arm is held down, the kick-up mechanism will function normally. Personally, I think if you just do some periodic maintenance on the system, you should be fine. Small amount of grease on the plunger surface, make sure the slider plate is properly positioned, and replace the cams every couple years. sm |

 I picked up the idea of trimming the rudder cams at the H-17 NA's in 1995. Have been racing with this change in all conditions since then. Never have had a rudder kick up. I did not add the shock cord.Caleb |
