Post subject:  H17 Newbie Questions

Hi, all just picked up a 89' stars and stripes edition.I have a H16 and have sailed other cats but sail my H16 more than anything.I'am wondering how much of a difference the H17 will be to the H16 i solo H17 is without jib does have wings and all rigging and gear is there.is it quicker better ride more stable etc etc. Also i tore the boat completely down as i will re-do paint and other things before next season as i live in northern MI.One thing that worries me is i cleaned it up washing and so fourth and were the holes are for the seats to go in i ran the hose in there to clean out debris and filled each hole up and stood there and watched the water go down. How hard of a fix is this or can i just put wings in and silicone around them whats the best method.Thanks.

As for the sailing experience, you'll get to that soon enough. Much different feel than a 17, much more controllable in heavy air.

Whatever you do, do not just "silicone up" the wings in the tubes. Leaky wing tubes are a realatively easy fix, but it will probably require a deck port near each wing tube so you can access the inside.

Read my article "Recharging Megawatt" in the May/Jun 2006 HOTLINE - Here. There's some detail on how to fix wing tube leaks.

spinfly, I think you will enjoy the H17. I sailed a H16 (mostly solo) for 20 years before changing to a H17Sport back in 2002 with no regrets. The H17 overall is a faster boat, much better in high wind with less tendency to pitch pole. The wings are perfect for getting your weight out, even without trapping and make great back rests in lighter air. I don't race, so the jib is great in light air and on reaches. Good luck on the wing socket repair. The only thing I would do different from the Hot Line instructions is substitute fiberglass fibers for the cotton fibers. Also consider installing Polyproplene ports instead of the standard ABS ports. They are more sun resistant, will last longer, and can be used with bottle ports. A good way to have drinks handy while sailing http://www.bottleport.com/ (I really like mine). I put my ports midway between the front wing sockets and the centerboard trunk. This location gives good access to either for repair.
