Post subject:  Mast Rotation

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out the best way to control Mast Rotation on a Hobie 17.

Can someone who has a successful Mast Rotation control, please explain the setup for me please.

I have a full boom.

Most (all?) the racers use the stock system for controlling rotation, although the style of cleat on the boom can vary. I use an aluminum clam cleat, which can be tough to uncleat after an upwind leg in heavy air.

I put a mark on the line to give me a reference point so that I can set the rotation consistently. A good starting point is to have the rotator arm pointing at the shroud when fully sheeted in.

You have probably seen the positive mast rotation set up with the shock cord attached to the hull tips and the pully on a rope attached around the mast and to the end of the rotator. It works well.

Buy a mast rotator arm for a boomlees and a Hobie 20 system from www.murrays.com. Works GREAT for me. This will control over rotaion for down wind. Then I have a line running from the arm to a (don't know the exact name of cleat, line runs thru it) to control mast roation going to weather. Hope this will help.

This is what I did:

I bought a mast rotator arm for a boomess from Murrays that is Like a V going out from the mast and straight across the back. I use the system for a Hobie 20 with two snaps rings, three pieces of line and shock cord. Tie the line across the bridle conncetors at front of beams. Then with line tied to holes in mast rotator I clip one end of shock cord to rings and loop it around front line and back to rings. This pulls mast forward for downwind to 110 degrees. For mast rotation I have a small pulley system with cleat that attches one end to boomand other to mast rotator. This sets mast rotation. Hope this make sense? If not call me. :D 8)

I checked Murrays; didn't find anything special for boomless. How looks the boomless mast rotation system? :roll:

Order part 24-3042 from Murray's. That is the arm. You will have to get the parts for the shock cords system and pulley system yourself as they don't make the bungee system kit anymore. If you are confused, call me and I will try to explain it to you. Real easy system that works great.
