Hobie 17 Boom Bail Distance

Hi-

I'm fixing up my 1986 H17 for racing, I know they have moved the boom mainsheet bale forward up the boom since then to accomodate more mast rake. Does anyone with a late model boat, or one that races with full mast rake know their distance from end of boom to attacment point of the bale? My bale connection point is at 8 3/4 inches from very end of boom.

I don't know the exact number, but three or four inches forward will put you in the ballpark.

I had an older boat with the boom bale in the original position. I wanted to install a second bale farther forward, but figured I'd test the location out before drilling the boom. I took some modern high-strength cordage (1000 lb breaking strength or so), tied a few loops around the boom and then tied the loops to the existing bale to keep them from sliding forward. I figured that way I could re-position the test bale until I figured out where I wanted it. In the end, it worked so well that I never touched it. Only took it off when I sold the boat because I figured someone would look at it and think something was wrong with the boom.

The drawing says 11 3/4" forward of the aft end of the extrusion (not including the casting) Angled at 12 degrees.

Was 9" and 30 degrees.

Looks like it changed in 88, but the drawing is not real clear on the revision date.
