Folks,

I went and looked at an ’86 17se earlier today. I’ve had a 14, a 16, currently drive an 18 so I know in general about Hobie’s and typical issues, but I’m not that familiar with a 17. Here’s what I found, what does the collective wisdom on the list think regarding value?

Hulls: no soft spots anywhere, small hairline cracks on top deck on both bows on both inside and outside edges, from roughly the bow tangs back halfway to front crossbar. Deck is solid in these areas. Both dagger boards smooth, no damage or gouges, operate properly. Sterns look solid, tight gudgeons, no stress cracks, hulls dry. 1 of 4 wing tubes has a leak, filled with water went down about ½ inch during inspection (60min). Small hairline cracks in top deck at both front crossbar mounts. .

Rudders: look fine, black plastic,tight

Mast: straight, good shape. Comptip is not covered, looks dull black, kinda like plastic. (Looks a lot duller than my 18 comptip, normal?) Main halyard needs replacing. Mast rotator is fine, looks like an aftermarket downhaul (triple pulley with camcleat?)

Boom: full length oval shaped with Trentec super goose.

Two Main sails: both delaminated.

Mesh trampoline, good shape but not Hobie. bungee cord lacing.

Nice steel trailer, rollers on back, cradles on front, big sail box,

Wing metal in nice shape, shade cloth wrapped around and bungee corded for wing tramps.

No corrosion seen anywhere.

So, what’s this thing worth? It needs a new sail, wing tramps, main halyard and mainsheet from what I can tell. Don’t know how serious the cracks are on the bow decks.

Thanks,

I got mine for $600 no trailer but had to buy new sails also and a tramp. I also refurbed the whole thing (new lines, buff, replace rudder components, etc). Hairline cracks are norm- I have them too, not worth fixing as they come back. I like my 18 better but as a single boat, it is cool. A big windsurfer.
