The MamaBob was recommended to me, by my Hobie Part store, as one that would fit on my 17Sport with out having to make any kind of special bracket.

However, I am having problems.

the "straps" don't really fit around the mounting shaft. The instructions say to "bend the mounting straps to conform to mast curve", but the more I bend them to conform to the shape of the mast, the narrower it gets, and the less it fits around the mounting shaft.
There is no way I'm going to get both holes in the strap flush to the mast for riveting.

another problem: if I could somehow manage the above problem, the rivet is going right into the seam where the aluminum extrusion slides into the comp tip.

Any suggestions? Have I got some weird mast? I can't be the only one to have tried to put a Mama Bob on a 17, can I?

Help!

Thanks,

Dan L

I believe we spoke on the phone today?

Hopefully problem solved. We do not expect the strap to become flush with the mast, especially when used on the smaller diameter mast head of a 17. Being flush is not critical or desired as this holds the post against the mast. If the strap were to be in contact at both rivet points it may not be holding a tightly as desired.

The aft rivet should be just ahead of the luff track groove (that divides the fiber portion from the metal or plastic luff track that is snapped onto the CompTip). Due to the smaller diameter of the 17 mast... the post may actually be more forward on the mast than on the side.

Yes Matt, we spoke. I appreciate your availability on the phone.

I got it on there, but not without some sweat. I really think that Hobie should provide accurate instructions for each model for which the product is expected to fit. The instructions and diagrams don't come close for the 17. Unfortunately, I had already set the first rivet, in the middle of the mast, as depicted in the diagram. It would have been really nice to know, before I drilled that hole and set that rivet, that "the post may actually be more forward on the mast than on the side."

how hard would it be for Hobie to provide a diagram specific to the H17, instead of showing a picture of a different mast, under the heading of H-17/H-18/ H-20/ h-21?

we're talking about a part that cost $220, drilling holes into a piece that costs $700....is it asking too much to have specific directions for each boat?

I had to take the Bob off my 17 when I bought it because the brackets/rivets/drill holes etc..... were a recipe to leak and I wanted to silicon every bit up I could in case my mast did hit the water. If the instructions are that bad and sailors are poking holes in the mast the Bob will do no good. Anyone ever dealt with a mast full of water? You may as well unleash one shroud and get it to shore. As I have posted previously I think Hobie builds a great series of boats however they FLAT OUT left the 17 behind and have never looked back. I just received my new Hobie catalog two weeks ago and you can still order a main sail for a 14 which was the flagship for Hobie back in the 60’s yet I did not see anywhere in the catalog where I could order a main for my 17. If Hobie has truly turned the other check and given up on the 17 and admitted it was a bomb like the non Hobie brand SolCat please do so I don’t waste my time. In one more year will I be able to get a part from Hobie or get left over’s from MURRAYS Marine. I don’t mind Hobie making a dud however please let me know Hobie and I will still always have a Hobie until I go to Hobie heaven.
