Post subject:  Hobie 17 to 17 sport conversion
All - I am looking for Hobie 17 sport, but it is hard to find used. I was wondering if anyone can help - how hard/easy is to convert H17 to H17 sport. I believe the main difference is the adding jib. Is it hard and expensive?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated....

You will need a jib kit including bridle spreader bar and replace the boom with a boomlet. That is about it. Murray's sells a jib hardware kit ($1095.00) and a 'super jib' (similar to H18 jib at $300.00 - $450.00, depending on cloth weight and color). This isn't the standard setup, it is more similiar the the H18 jib set-up (the 'super jib is a bit bigger than the standard H17Sport jib), but it probably cost about the same. You will have to contact a hobie dealer for the price of the OME conversion. I dont know what the boomlet cost. Good luck, I really like my 2000 H17Sport. :wink:

I just went through a partial conversion in which I added the jib, but not the boomlet. I did not buy the jib sail because I already had a reacher sail.

I bought the hobie brand conversion kit for about $925, including shipping. The installation was not too difficult. It required some drilling and riveting. I had to buy a heavy-duty rivet gun for $28 from amazon. Changing the mast tang was the hardest part, with lots of drilling and riveting. Installing the swivel cleats was relatively easy. Everything else is just rigging.

The kit comes wirh new shrouds, but I am using my old ones.

Does the Hobie jib kit come with the jib included for $925.00? If so it is a whole lot cheaper. Even if not, it is still quite a bit cheaper. Way to go Hobie. I sure wish the Hobie catalog had the prices in it.

The printed copy does. The on-line version is the "International" one without prices, since the price varies depending on what country you're in.
