I have a 17 and an 18 looking to get a new flathead for the 18 and been talking to a sailmaker in Switzerland Forward Sailing makes a nice looking flathead which he says will fit a 17 and an 18

Im sure the 17 foot is much higher cut and perhaps less area overall

I know it won't be class legal but they look like good sails

anyone have a view on whether one sail could fit both?

It won't work.

The 18 has a 90 degree (roughly) angle between the luff and the foot.

The 17 has a much smaller angle (~75 degree) angle between the luff and foot.

On an 18, the 17 sail's clew would be way up in the air.

On a 17, the 18 sail's clew would be on the rear crossbar.

The foot of a 17's sail is much shorter than an 18's, too.
