I just bought a H-17, but the Main is delaminating, so I need a servicable one or new. Anyone have recomendations for buy one. I would have to assume someone is making them after market or is the recomdation to buy from Hobie. What does the Main and Jib cost?

The Hobie brand sail is a good quality sail that will last you many years. It is made specifically for the boat by the same company that makes the boat, so you know it will work well. It is also the only sail that's approved for one-design class racing. Hard to justify buying an aftermarket sail, even if it saves you a few bucks. In the long run, the Hobie sail is generally the best way to go.

Same thing has happen to me. After some shopping around I've decided to go with Whirlwind Sails. After a long wait, the main sail has arrived yesterday. The quality is truly outstanding at roughly half a Hobie dealer quote. And this is for a square-head pentex -- a nice upgrade.

I would still give a Hobie dealer a chance. If you can get a Hobie sail at 30-50% more than aftermarket, it is still an acceptable deal.

Another option is to get a used sail. I've seen people selling H17 sails in $300-600
range for a main.

I love my Whirlwind SuperR Pentex Squaretop. Not race legal, but well made and fast. Got mine in 2007 and use it ~ 45 times a year in moderate to heavy wind. The only down side is that the window material of the main has become brittle, but Chip Buck (Whirlwind) is replacing it under 'warranty'. I just pay shipping, sweet.

I agree. If you are not racing at Hobie regattas, then Whirlwind SuperR Pentex Squaretop is definitely the way to go. Longer lasting and more power than stock. Worth the small hit if you are racing Portsmouth.
