Hi - I have a Hobie 17 sport / mid 80’s uk boat. Can you advise whether it’s normal when out on the trapeze wire that the windward shroud/stay should slacken intermittently & for some side bend in the lower third of the mast to occur – it generally happens when go through a larger wave…should the mast be that flexible to allow this wobble? Thank you.

It's normal, but when it does that, there's probably not enough wind to be out on the trapeze.

What's happening is that there's some slack in the standing rigging (which is normal) and you're pulling the whole rig towards you. Essentially, there's less tension in the shroud than your weight on the trapeze, so the shroud goes slack.

What's not good is the shock load from the shroud suddenly going taut again. The shock can literally remove the deck from the boat:

Thanks for your reply - The flex in the mast has only been on my mind as I recently had to straighten out a bend in the mast resulting from a bad dry/land capsize…and wondered whether this process could have weakened it…but if all H17 are designed/experience some flex, I’m not worried. Thanks. (interesting locker design in your photo!)
