What would you consider a fair price range for a "like new" (lightly used, well maintained, ready to sail) 1999 Hobie 17 Sport with trailer?

Thanks,
Adam

Like everything - it depends.

One man's idea of "well maintained" is another man's piece of junk.
Stored in a garage? Or left in the sun (and snow)? What's the trampoline like? What kind of rudders does it have?

What's the trailer condition? Gavlanized or painted steel or aluminum? All the lights work? What's the size / condition of the tires?

If the boat still has the original main sail, it's probably close to delaminating if it's not already.

Going on the assumption there are no significant issues, like leaking wing tubes or soft spots and sight unseen, the boat is probably worth $3500 or less. Trailer is probably worth $250 (steel), $350 (galvanized) or $500+ (aluminum). Aluminum trailers need to be thoroughly inspected for fatigue cracks.

To really make an estimate, though - we need photos (more the better).

That one is also for sale in the "For Sale" section here. It does appear to be in exceptional shape.

All I'll say is that it's overpriced.

My 17 is one of the last ones made (a 2007) and it cost (new from the dealer) just over $10K (a Sport, no trailer or extras).

Your add:

Quote:
easily single-handed; ideal for 2; accommodates 4.

This is a gross exaggeration -- mildly speaking. More accurate:

"ideal for 1; accommodates 2."

For anyone familiar with H17, you just put in doubt the rest of the add... For anyone not familiar with H17 -- setting for a disappointment.

I have a feeling that the $10K was a special 'mbounds' price, unless the dealer was just trying to get rid of it.

Not really. I did bargain with him; after all, he had been sitting on it for 6 months. Nobody likes carrying boat inventory past August (when I bought it).

MBounds, SWEET, what a great deal. With modification, the H16 integrated track cars work well in the track of the front crossbar.

Well, since I use it pretty much exclusively for one-design racing, the front track really doesn't do much for me. I sold off the Sport-specific equipment (I never even unpacked the jib), bought a boom and a mast rotator and stripped off all the other hardware to convert the boat to an SE. The only things left from the Sport are the eye straps on the front crossbar, since I thought I might use them in a positive mast rotation system (but haven't yet).

Hey Matt, I thought the last run of 17s was in Oct 2003. As I remember we had to get a group of 10 to commit to buying the run before they would proceed.

According to the barcode sticker on the transom of my boat, it was built on 9/15/06.

I just updated it today with the 2012 hull graphics.

Consider this...are you buying the boat for personal pleasure and do you put a price on that? Are you going to use it and be happy that you bought something that's nice and ready to sail?

I bought a '99 H17s this year and paid $5k. Had two sets of sails among all the extras. Did I overpay? Maybe...but am I completely satisfied? You bet.

Edit: If you want to talk about it you can PM me and we can talk on the phone about my entire experience...too lazy to type it all out but I can tell you what to look for and how much money I've spent since I got it sailing.
