Post subject:  Where can I find a new sail? [1985 17SE]

From browsing the boards, I see that the sail seems to be a problem area.. de-lamination!

Mine suffers from the same.

Can anyone offer any advice on where to find an inexpensive used one?

Many thanks!

I would avoid a used sail unless it is young (> sail number 5000), in which case it probably is not for sale. Every "good condition" used sail I have seen has been seriously delaminated. Consider the seller's return policy prior to purchase.

A racer may sell you a good used sail that is no longer race-worthy but your chances are slim. A racer will probably sell the sail to another racer in his/her fleet. This is a good forum to inquire since racers participate. I can sell you a used H17 sail, but it is bad.

Hobie sailors speak highly of Whirlwind Sails, I have never sailed with one but they look good.

Many thanks for the advice. After a bit of thought, I think a new one is in order. I got the boat for a heck of a deal so I don't feel I bad about spending a a little money on er to make her tip top.

In that spirit, what is the fastest, race ready sail to be had?

There's only one that's class legal - the one that Hobie makes (available from any dealer).

"class legal" implies Hobie sanctioned events. For non Hobie sanctioned races you can use a sail from any sailmaker.

The subject of the performance, quality, and cost of H17 sails relative to non-class legal sails has been the subject of several threads.

Not entirely correct.

The International Hobie 17 is a one-design class. Part of the "buy-in" to a one-design class is that everybody plays by the same rules insofar as equipment is concerned. The theory being that the skill of the sailor and not the equipment (or the depth of their wallet) determines the results on the water.

One of the Hobie 17 rules is that class legal sails come from Hobie Cat (as it is for all of the Hobie classes). Byproducts of this rule are that 1) everyone has a sail cut from the same patterns and 2) it helps support a robust dealer network that continues to support boats no longer in production.

Handicap ratings are determined based on the class legal configuration of a boat. If you have a non-class legal sail, you will take a rating hit under every catamaran handicapping system in use - because the boat is not class legal.

The fastest sail is not necessarily class legal. Adell50, if you plan to race, get a Hobie Sail. If you just want to go fast, look into a Whirlwind Super-R Squaretop, but it is not cheap $1200.00 at last look for Pentex. I got the Pentex version several years back and have found it to be a faster sail than the Hobie sail and holds up MUCH better (Pentex vs Mylar laminate).
