| Post subject: | Adding a jib to my H 17 |
Can anyone give me input and or photos to help with the details of adding a jib sail to my H 17? I have a jib, roller furling hardware and jib sheets, but could use some input on the wire pulley at the top. Do I leave my current forestay in place or replace it entirely with the jib wire? Any links to advise on how to do it right? |

Rex: You will not be happy with the stock jib. Have someone cut you a custom reacher. Mine is about 60 sq ft. I will try to have my local sailmaker get specs this week from mine. Doug |

Rex, I recently acuired a 17 someone was trying to add the jib on and sell it as a sport. The sport has a different headstay tang and the forestay does not match up length wise. I don't know if the shrouds are the same length on the sport. I have sent an email to support and have not gotten an answer. I have already dropped the mast back to acomodate the longer forestay but it it will not be enough. Nick

Nick: The shrouds should be the same. The whole bridle system is different on a Sport vs SE. The SE is like a inverted Y. The Sport has a metal foil with roller furler mounted on it and a bridle with a swivel at top and a pulley jib halyard system. If confused call me. The 17 tang location is the same for Sport and SE versions. The original shackle hole location is used when setting the location for the Sport Tang. The shrouds are the same length for both boats. The forestays are very different and including the bow spreader, forestay and upper pigtail, they should work fine. |

Matt, If the shrouds are the same length? What hole are you using for the side adjustment? I am trying to get an idea of the mast rake difference between the SE and the Sport. I also race DN's and we use around 70 degrees of mast rake but you will lose down wind ability with excess aft rake in a DN.

I am thinking about adding jib to my h17 as well. In Hobie catalog they have "17 Sport Jib Hardware Kit (with spreader)" part # 52995610 but is expensive ($809.00) and one have to order jib separately. Is there any other (less expensive) way to do the conversion? |

Doug, I appreciate your answer, but I think we are going wrong direction  . Hobie catalog offers conversion kit for $809.00 which is cheaper. I don't understand why should I "mount the blocks track 18" off rear crossbar" as I want to add a jib only and don't want to do anything with my main setup.

Bob: Does the $809 kit come with two harken hexarachets and two 18" tracks? Or just swivel cleats, like the stock Sport setup. I did a lot of research on this before I bought. Look at my pics on the link I sent you. The reacher is twice the size of the stock jib, Trust me I went with the stock jib first. In my opinion (Sorry Hobie) it is useless. The reacher overlaps the main a LOT. That is the reason the tracks are mounted on the tramp track 18" off the rear crossbar. Bob Curry (Hall of Fame uni sailor) set this up for me.
