Guys: I got this part with I broke the old casting on my boom on my 86 Hobie 17. It will not fit the stock goose part on my mast. It is about 1/4 inch to big. Do you have the part that will fit or know the Hobie part number? http://www.mariner-sails.com/partdetail.asp?id=23403 Doug Snell |

The Super Goose is for the 18's.... And I can't tell if you are trying to use it in place of the H-17 goose or in addition. But the stock H-17 Goose part number is 50406231. Brian C |

Hi Doug, It's good to see some activity here for a change! I bougt a Trentec supergoose, and with apologies to Trentec, I put it in a drawer and got the hobie stainless part. The QC was not good on the Trentec - If Trentec sees this and would like an explanation and a pic, I'd be happy to oblige. But there was another issue. The pin coming out of the end of my 1986 boom is .500, the stock vertex has a slot for a .250 pin. I milled .125 off of each side of the boom pin to achieve a cross section of .250, used the stock Hobie vertex and I was off. Well not quite, the boom was from a 1986 and the pin was 90 degrees off (we are talking the boom's axial rotation limiter). This required removing the casting from the boom. Driving the timing pin out. Cross drilling the timing pin hole at 90 degrees, then reassembling. There were some strange changes from 1986 to present with the H17 gooseneck system, that as far as I can tell are undocumented. Dan 2002 H17SE Sport |

The original Gooseneck for the 17 did not use a vertex ("U"... same as Super Goose, but stainless). The boom pin was a post with a hole drilled that pinned directly to the gooseneck on the mast base. The gooseneck was allowed to rotate vertically in the mast base casting, the boom pin / boom rotated laterally in the gooseneck. It soon became clear that that wouldn't really work well. Goosenecks would rotate low enough to drag against the front crossbar and the "universal" hinging action was inconsistent. Very soon after, they went back to the standard Hobie system... fixed gooseneck, vertex and boom pin that is flattened to fit into the vertex. There is a kit to convert older models # 50406261 Gooseneck Update kit. |

The '86 boom end-cap and "timing" pin allow about 45 degrees of axial rotation. Is that still the case with the newer boom set-up? If not, should I fix the boom pin to the casting to eliminate the rotation? If so, what's the advantage? Off topic: how do I embed a pic in a post? Thanks, Dan 2002 H17SE / Sport |

The current boom pin has about 70-90 degrees rotation. To embed a picture, you need the picture hosted somewhere. You use the "Img" button above the post text window followed by the complete URL of the image and then close by using the "Img*" button. |

Matt: Thanks again. The part you told me to get worked fine. I especially like the extra hole that mount with a pin thru it. Looks REAL strong I should not have any problems. Super Gooseneck fit right in. Getting ready for the Texas Catamaran Championships. Good Sailing, Doug |

I broke a gooseneck this spring and had it welded. I did not want to wait for another one to be shipped. My question is why are they breaking? I can only think the boom bail may be to far aft and causing to much pressure on the gooseneck. What is the recomended position of the bail in relation to the rear of the boom? |

Nick: Once I replaced the old casting with a new one and got the Super Gooseneck and the part Matt said, I never had a problem. I was out in 15-20 with gust to 22-25 Sat and it never made a sound. Think if you replace these parts, you won't have a problem. Doug |
