Post subject:  Hobie 17 repair - Front cross bar end lifted away from hull

Hello.

It was blowing today, and I heard a noise while sitting on the starboard wing.

I looked down and the front cross bar end had lifted away from the hull.

I can see there is only one bolt and it is inboard side of the hull. I do sort of remember that there is a sleeve that the front crossbar slides into.

Does anyone have advice/experience as to repair?

Thank-you

My plan was to dig out the rotted material in the fiberglass cap and fill with thickened epoxy and then glassing over that for the cap to mount to. Drill and tap. Thankfully, I am not there yet. Just went back with larger screws.

First step would be to remove the tramp and crossbars and see what's going on.

Yes, there are aluminum castings mounted to the outboard edge of each hull at the front and rear crossbar locations. The outboard ends of the crossbars slip over these castings and then the crossbars are held in place by the inboard bolts.

My guess is that one of three things has happened:

1) The crossbar has cracked and split at the outboard edge allowing it to lift away from the casting. The crossbars have a tendency to develop a stress crack starting at the outboard end along the track for the trampoline.

2) The casting has loosened up and/or completely broken away or detached from the hull. The castings are held in place by 2 or 3 screws as well as two "prongs". The holes in the hull for the screws and prongs have a tendency to wear out over time allowing the casting to loosen.

3) The fiberglass area where the casting screws into has cracked or broken in some way allowing the casting to move independent of the hull.
