Thread on my '95 h17 wing ripped out, maybe dry rot ? I see 2 sets of holes so I assume it's been sewn once beyond the original. White vinyl wing tramp seems viable, but I don't want to add another set of holes, so I thought I'll try hand sewing through existing holes, tedious as it might seem. Hopefully get me through the season, trying to learn her fickle ways as I await a buyer, or who knows, maybe I'm meant to keep her. Retiring Jan 1 so I'm willing to see what next season brings. Learning on this forum (things like: one might want to release the downhaul before trying to unhook the mainsail!) and have met some experienced sailors who are willing to show me what she can do, ah but the season is fleeting and the water temp starting to drop. But, I digress.. Question is, what type/ strength thread to use to repair the wing? Should I go to a sail loft outfit to get, or would some 80-100 pound test braided dyneema fishing line be cheaper/better? I think 200yd spool costs about $30. I called a sail repair shop, he said I'd have to remove the wing tramp for him to sew it @ $75 per hour. I'd rather not drill out the rivets,etc, but have the skills if need to. The concern is, shifting weight on the wing will saw through the thread which might be what happened in the first place. Fair winds, tx for reply. Scow |

You don't need to drill out rivets to remove the wing tramp. The inner tube can be removed by spreading the legs until it comes off one of the castings (a helper is really useful). Once the inner tube is slid out, the tramp can be worked around one end of the tramp frame. As I recall, it works best if you take it off the aft end. $30 for thread?
