Post subject:  Sail type and age question

Hi guys, Scowhound back with another question..Trying to figure out how my 1995 h17 sport ended up with the sails on her. The main and jib are mylar with flour. green accent and the H17 logo, main is a squaretop with sail number 2211. Can anyone estimate age based on sail number? Could she have been ordered that with as an option, or? Would this be race legal? -- thanks--Scow

Not race legal. The 17 never had a square top from Hobie Cat. Most likely, they are from Whirlwind Sails (look for the sailmaker's patch at the sail tack).

Sail number 2211 would be from the mid/late '80s - if it was on an original Hobie-branded sail.

That's not a complete hull number, but the sail number would indicate that it's a mid-'70s boat. Starting in 1973, Hobie 16 hull numbers took the form of CCMα####M##α, where:

α = an alpha character (first one starts with B; second one is A through L, indicating the month of production)
# = numeric character (first four are a serial number; second set is the model year)
