| Post subject: | Good rigging diagram? |
Was just “gifted” a Hobie 17. Have wanted a Hobie for years and years and now I have an old and hopefully functional one. Have not set up the boat yet and wondering if anyone has good resources on that. Also have this frayed wire sticking out of the top of the aft end of the boom wondering what the hell that is. |

I’m in Charlotte nc. No active fleets near me. Took it to the lake today and the rig the previous owner used to raise the mast on the trailer failed. No damage but had to purchase a new winch. Now trying to figure out where all these lines attach. The aft stays are already attached, but the front ones seem impossibly short. Previous owner swears everything is correct. |

You can lengthen the forestay by putting an adjuster (10 or 8 hole) where the forestay and bridles meet. Also make sure the bridles are in the top hole of their adjusters. How much are the front stays missing by (an inch, a foot, etc.)? I agree with Matt, start with all of the stays in the top hole of the adjusters. The shackle used to attach the shrouds to the mast should also be installed in the lowest hole of the mast tang (some mast tangs have multiple holes). If the shrouds still don't reach, then either the stays are the wrong length, or you have something rigged incorrectly. This may sound dumb, but is it one line half way down in the front then it splits in two, with one branch going to each hull? If so, that would solve part of the problem. Also, do I twist the mast to the head on position before stepping it up or after? Where should I grab to twist the map. |

Yes, there is a single forestay wire that connects to the mast tang and then branches off into two bridle wires. The forestay and bridle wires are each roughly 10 feet long. It is something of a unique design because the forestay is very short and the bridle wires are very long, but since there’s no jib, it works fine. Start with the mast rotated 90 degrees when stepping the mast. Once it’s fully raised, you can rotate it straight. Do the reverse when lowering the mast. If you forget to rotate the mast when lowering it, you will lever the mast base out of the step/ball and the mast will come crashing down. sm |
