Hi All,

I recently purchased an '89 H17 with sport conversion and been figuring out how it all goes together. Sunday I raised the mainsail for the 1st time & then wondered where on earth do I tie off the main halyard.?? Dropped the sail and used a little google foo & discovered the hook, dropped the mast so I could take a look at it and figure out how it works and found what you see in the pic. Is what I'm looking at pinned with the rivet the 'old flopper'? At the moment it's bound up on the partially obscured rivet tail to the right of the pivot point - it looks like it was designed to rotate between the 2 rivet tails counter clockwise of where it currently sits.

Yep. Remove it for best function. Don't even recall them being on 17s.

Yes, they were on the 17s. I had an...1988...I think. Bought it new in 1990. It had the flipper. I never had any problems hooking or unhooking.

The one in the picture is bent and over-rotated past the upper stop. Maybe someone did that to “deactivate” it. Anyway, you can use a drill or grinder to remove the rivet that holds on the flopper and run without it. Make sure that the boat is pointed directly into the wind when raising and lowering the sail for best results.

Thanks for all the comments, yes the flipper is kinda stuck in that position, next time I have reason to drop the mast I'll remove it.
