Post subject:  Pre-Registration deadline for Hobie Tiger, 20, 17 NA Champs

Check out the website: http://www.hobie3.org/tiger

Current registrations show:

18 - Hobie 20s
21 - Hobie Tigers
21 - Hobie 17s

Greg Thomas and Jacques Bernier will be there defending their NA Tiger title (2 time champions in the last two events). Greg and Jacques are just back from the F18 North Americans held in Quebec, Canada having placed second, by only two points, to 3 time F18 World Champion and current Tiger World Champion Mitch Booth. They are really moving well and will be tough to beat!

:D Looking good on the preregistered list. So far, more H-17's that Tigers or H-20's. Check the website, conditions and weather look great.

:D Congratulations to Greg Raybon H-17 National Champion! Good luck in the Worlds. Greg was followed by Ed Noland and Dan Kulkowski, all from New Jersey. Past Champ Dan Borg was fourth, with Bill Myrter, representing our Grand Master team, fifth.

Dave Wilder, from our Team Northwest was seventh, and Jan Kristiansen was ninth. They both had some third place finishes, and were right in there. Scott Ruggles had some good finishes, before having to switch to the race committee service with a bad back. Hugh Barraclough and I rounded out our Team with higher numbers, but we had good time.

Seven days with twenty races, including the Otter Regatta made for a full work out. Tuesday, with the six foot seas, and medium winds made this an experience with surf we do not get to enjoy in the Northwest.

The H-17's lead the number of boats in the Event, again demonstrating that this Fleet is alive, well and growing.

All H-17 Sailors were very helpfull sharing information, tips, and were always there to help get the boats back up the beach, as you hit the shore.

All in all, a great Event.

EARTH TO CALEB!!!

What do you call "alive, well and growing"?
There were 21 17s at the 2004 NAs.
There were 35 17s at the 2003 NAs.
There were 43 17s at the 2002 NAs(Mega Event).

And how about the Tiger Class?
There were 19 Tigers in 2004.
There were 17 Tigers in 2003.
There were 26 Tigers in 2002, the first year for the Tiger.

How long before the 20 is discontinued?
There were 17 20s in 2004.
There were 23 20s in 2003.
There were 50 20s in 2002, yes FIFTY.

Look at the total number of boats.
There were 57 in 2004.
There were 75 in 2003.
There were 119 in 2002.

Is this Progress?

For an event in California (west coast) it's not bad. In my experience of over 14 years on the National circuit, it's common for more west coast sailors to travel east for a national event then a east coast sailor to travel west for a national. I'm sure the history shows that most national events have been smaller when in California or the west coast when compared to the # of boats at a previous or following years events on the east coast.

Living in NC, ever been to a national event in California? How many on the east coast?

Greg,

Your "west coast" excuse is lame.

The drop between 2002 and 2003 (44), IS MUCH GREATER than the drop between 2003 and 2004 (18).

The 2003 Tiger/20s was held in Pensacola, right down the road from the 2002 Mega in Fort Walton.
The 20s dropped by 27, more than HALF, when the event only moved 60 miles.

The new leadership is doing a terrific job.

The 2002 event was the Mega event which had a lot of interest from around the country which is why the #'s were so great for all classes. In 2003 the location was basically the same and therefore a lot of boats especially from the west coast did not choose to go because they didn't want to make the same trek out to FL 2 years in a row. I think I was only 1 of a handful of people from the west coast who made it to the 2003 event. The west coast east coast thing is very valid.

Post subject:  Hobie 17's at Monterey

Hi Sam, always good to hear from you. Monterey, CA is a remote and expensive venue. We were pleased with the turn out of 22 H-17's from all over the Country. This number was greater than the 20 Tigers and 17 H-20's. The top four boats traveled over 3,000 miles from the Northeast. Wrinkley made the trek from AR. Two from TX, Jon from KS, and two from your home state of NC. We had five teams from Div. 4 in the Northwest.

Our fleet of H-17's in Div.4 is growing. Several new sailors, and more converts are now in our fleet. At least one new H-17 has been ordered. Thru the efforts of Laura Sullivan, Peter Nelson, and Bob Johnson, just to name a few, our fleet of all sailors is growing. To get some ideas on how you can help your local fleet grow go to our websites, www.sailsandpoint.org and www.hobiedivision4.org.

Caleb Tarleton, Fleet 95, Div 4. and US SAILING Multihull Council.
