Tigers came in yellow. Was that just a short run or something that can be ordered. I'll be ordering a new boat at the end of the year, just wondering if I could get a yellow FXone. I'm bored with white. |

There was an all-female Tiger from Europe that was pink. Even if you can request it it would probably be a long time as you'd have to wait for them to do another hull production run. The problem I can see is it would likely have to be a light color to keep it from overheating in the sun. You should totally go for gold and red metal-flake - the Hobie Bass-Boat!

That would be funny. I was thinking either orange, blue like that H20 at nationals last year, or yellow. Orange would just be cool. So would lime green come to think of it. Anything other than white. |

The problem with any color (other than white) is that they fade in the sun. Especially red, orange & yellow. If you've ever seen any red boats from the 70's and you know what I mean. There was a fire-engine red Hobie 20 made for the 1994 Nationals (#500). It's probably half pink now. |

Fading would be an issue. Especially since I don't have a spot to keep my boat indoors in the summer. Well I do, but not at my house and I'm definetly too lazy to make use of it. I think I'm going to do some experimenting with vinyl. It's pretty cheap to buy in sheats. I think half the cost of graphics is having something designed and cut. The hulls are actually 4 different pieces, the main part is two vertical halves with a deck between the beams and another deck ahead of the front beam. I'm thinking I'll just cover the front deck in red to match the graphics and call it good for now. 
Do the coloured boats do better with consistent care. i.e. waxing? Nice thing being in a boat class that is in its infancy is that I don't have to worry about blending in with 40 other boats at nationals.

It has more to do with UV. They are getting better with UV protective coatings (so you can get away with unpainted carbon, for example, though you still have to worry about overheating in the sun causing outgassing of the epoxy, bubbles, layer seperation, etc) but there's far less need for it on white gelcoat so I doubt Hobie has, needs, or uses it. Same issue with the kayaks - older plastics of any color had little UV protection and would fade, oxidize, and turn to powder if left out in the sun year after year. Modern (last ten years or so) plastics have gotten a lot better and I bet the new Hobie rotomolds could sit in the sun for years without fading or powdering. |

Colored hulls are cool looking but they require a lot of maintainence. I've had boats with tangerine orange hulls/white decks and blue hulls/blue decks in the past. From my experience, white definitely has advantages. White hulls do not show scratches as colored hulls do. You will scratch it the first time you use it. Plus it is a lot easier to match white gel coat in case of a repair and white is not prone to fading as quickly. White may be boring but it's easier to care for and will keep your boat looking new longer. |
