H14 Gudgeon Upgrade Problem

Post subject:  H14 Gudgeon Upgrade Problem

I ordered and received what I thought would be an "as advertised" gudgeon upgrade for my H14. You know, the one piece cast design (P/N 50102011) Hobie lists it as "GUDGEON CASTING H14/16".....Anyway, two problems with the design and instructions.
1. The instructions say to oversize the screw holes with a 1/4" drill bit. --This is not big enough to compensate for the hole centerline difference. The hole must then be either drilled larger or elongated with a dremmel. In my opinion, after the holes are drilled or reamed to fit, there is not sufficient metal left on the inner cast for strength.
2. The instructions also say nothing about the lower portion of the gudgeons having to be cut off??? ( the additional 2 lower screw holes) This gudgeon is too long and extends over the drain plug by about 3/4". At this point there are 2 options. The first is to cut off the lower portion entirely, which is what I did. The second is to plug your drain holes for good and/or move them somewhere else.
Bottom line......after reaming out the hole centerlines and cutting the lower portion off, the so called added strength was gone and I am out $60.00. I think I should stick with stainless steel. I can email you pictures if you would like.

Anyone else try this???

I have them on my 14 and also had to cut the bottom off. However, the holes matched well and I fitted them on with a drill motor. Maybe you should have aligned the top holes first and seen if the middle/bottom holes matched up? Only a suggestion. Try putting them on and see if the areas you suspect break.

Also, did you file away at the top of the hull lip so the gudgeon will fit snugly against the hull??

I didn't need to file the top lip, they were fine in that respect. My problem was the hole centerlines were way out. All holes on my boat were offset inward (vertically) considerably compared to the new gudgeons. I did get them to fit and I'm pretty sure they will hold quite well. I just don't think the rudder system gained any strength over the standard gudgeons after all the "modifications". Thank you for the help/advise.

My next, and last, item on my H14T "to do" list is to paint the hulls and tramp frame. I have access to a paint booth with equipment but no experience.
1. I've been advised to use a polyester paint on the hulls. Is this correct or should I use another paint?
2. Any idea on what type of primer and paint for the aluminum frame?
Any help is always appreciated.

I have a 1974 h-14,I sanded the hulls all the way doun to the gel coat primed and sanded between each coat with a tot of 3 finish coats.The results were beautiful!! Check out yacht paint .com . The brand was Interlux Brightside, coupled with the reccomended primer this makes a very durable finish.I have beeched on rough shores and have yet to scratch or gouge this finish it is as strong as gel-coats .I did not have access to a booth .Instead I used a foam roller & got an auto like finish!! :D good luck west marine carries this paint
