Quick question, how do you install some hobie grommets in a vinyl tramp? Can / should I use a soldering iron, and burn a small 3/8 inch hole first??? Never done it before. Thanks in advance.

Normally, a grommet kit includes a hole cutter (with a cheap piece of wood to hammer on so you don't damage the cutter on your driveway or patio). You hit the cutter with a hammer (similar to hitting a nail set)to punch out a hole in the vinyl, a base with a recessed indentation the same diameter as the grommets being used and a grommet set tool (like the nail set). You'll need to remove the tramp from the boat to do it correctly. 1st use the hole cutter (no heat-don't melt the vinyl) and make a hole where you want the grommet, then place the base beneath the vinyl where you made the hole. Next, place the half of the grommet with the shaft part on the base so that the shaft protrudes up thru the hole. Now place the ring half of the grommet over the shaft with the indent on the ring facing upwards and begin tapping the set tool with a hammer. This makes the shaft of the grommet curl downwards locking the two pieces to the vinyl. I would recommend practicing on a few grommets before you try setting one in the tramp.

Thanks very much Rick, for the detailed help. I did get the hole punch too, so just punch out the small hole in the vinyl, and follow your directions for the male and female parts of the grommet. Great....... Here goes....... :)
