Hi, I had my first sail in 11-15 Knot winds today, lots and lots of fun but I need some tips on depowering. The wind was onshore, so coming back to the tiny beach I was running dead down-wind with the mainsheet out full and the traveler out too. I was going pretty fast, rudders humming. What is the correct procedure to depower when running? Should I pull the traveler in and sheet in too? The only problem I saw with this is that it's an onshore wind, so I need to pull the boat around in a quick 180 to reverse into the beach. I'd need to remember to let the traveller out whilst doing the turn, wouldn't I? I'm guessing otherwise, half way through the turn I could end up tipping? The reason I want to come in slow, is that area can get very busy with boats, swimmers, windsurfers, swimming dogs etc. and I don't want to come charging in like a maniac. Also I'd like some tips on depowering on other points of sail. On a Southerly the same beach would be approached on a beam reach what's the best way to depower then? |

as for the onshore winds im not really sure.. but when i depower i find that pointing in straight into the wind to be the most affective way to depower..(pointing into ions) about 5-10 meters away from the shoreline let all sails fly then about 1-3 meters away from the shore line point straight into the wind

i agree to this opinion, and it works well! If you are two persons on a 14turbo you can point into the wind a little bit earlier. Then the two persons sit on the front of the two hulls, holding the foresail back  the cat is drifting slowly through the surf to the beach. Don´t forget to raise the rudders before!!Have a nice day! |

Thanks guys, that's what I've been doing, turning 180 into the wind, but I had to do it really late. If I did it further from the beach the current would push me out again, regardless of what the wind was doing. So I had to come in very close and turn 180 within 4 metres of the shore. Not good as it's full speed up until then. When I tried further out I couldn't reverse to shore as the current was winning. So are there no tricks to depower whilst running? Would pulling the traveler to centre be a bad idea? Also how do you depower heading to a beach on a beam reach? |

Well after a few bad weather weekends and a few repairs I managed to get out in 15 knots NNE again today (lots of hull flying )Coming back to the beach on a run, I centered the traveler and sheeted in and it depowered me a lot. I also added a small single block with a becket to the downhaul which has given me a kind of power downhaul. Yeah so came in slow with the traveler held at center but not cleated and then turned into the wind, letting the traveler and sheet go, to do what they wanted during the turn, and then backed in. Worked like a charm. Now I need to sail the lagoon on a big Southerly and see how to do it on a beam reach. |
