Hello all. Just bought a Hobie 14 last sunday. Thought I would join here for what I am sure will be a multitude of questions about the boat and sailing in general. The boat seemed in good enough condition to me. No cracks in the hulls, no bends in the mast or tramp frame beams. I only got the boat, mast, rudders, and trailer. I will be learning the parts as I buy them and when I have a complete boat maybe I will know half of the correct names for everything. Things I need for certain are a boom (complete assembly), sail (or sails if I get the turbo kit), rigging, and lines. From what I have found out on my own, I think the boat had a turbo kit on it at one time. If the last two numbers on the hull indicate year model...its a 79. (at least I am older than the boat!) A replacement turbo kit for the rigging only, no jib sail I think, will run me around 600 US dollars. I am thinking of just getting the regular rigging to begin with until I determine if my godson and I can actually sail. The boat has a dolphin striker with a cable running through it to the corners of the beams. I also think the forward mounts on the hulls are for the turbo kit as well. I am estimating a full turbo upgrade to this boat to cost me about one thousand dollars. I am planning to refurbish the boat in the following order. First get the lines/cables from the top of the mast to the sides and front and a mast step kit. I should then be able to see how all that works and practice a few times with my godson in stepping the mast. Next I think I will get the boom assembly followed by a mainsail and practice on dry land a few more times. Then I guess all the rest of the rigging I will need, some new bolts for the rudders, hull plugs, and the mainsheet pully block system thing. I also will have to get the rudder extension handle part and fittings to the rudder crossbar. The line holding the tramp tight is a bit frayed so I will replace it. The material seems to be in fair shape as it supported my weight when I walked across it as a test. It will get a further workout when my godson and I practice stepping the mast. I think I will try sailing it a few times on local lakes as a unirig to see how things go before I get a turbo kit. I will be performing my refurbishing from payday to payday wich comes every other week as my budget allows. I think a Hobie Cat is a much better sink for my money than poker and beer. I think I will have it in a sailable condition by the end of June or the middle of July. Until then I am reading the Hobie U pdf and having my godson research sailing online and at the local library. He is 16 and hopefully can remember things with more ease than myself. I am in West Texas and plan to sail Lake Allan Henry and Colorado City Lake. I would prefer to sail Lake JB Thomas but it needs water in it. If any of you are in this area and see us coming on the water, please forgive our nautical manners and it might be good to give us a wide berth. We will not fly a Jolly Roger, our colors will be a white cow skull on a black field. We call it the Jolly Rancher. Nice to meet you all, hatu |
