I recently acquired 2 Hobie 14's- an '80 H14 and an '82 T14...

I've sailed small monohulls but no cat experience- been intrigued ever since working with a former Hobie racer back in the '70s and now find my 'semi-retired' state allowing at least a summer for some wet fun!

Accumulated questions to start:
  • What do main sail numbers mean? I have #40253 in fair shape and not my most favorite colors but at least I don't have to pay $300 (eBay price) just to try it...
    Image
  • Anyone know how to revive a stubborn zipper to functionality?
I inherited a jib bag with the longest zipper I've ever seen and it opens and closes barely...
Was this original equipment on T14s?
    Image
  • Where does a black OCG rudder blade fit re quality?
I have one and it pings a lot sharper than the other white ones- wish I had 2...
    Image
  • Is/was it common to wrap you tiller extension with small line?
Mine looks like someone took hours to embellish it years ago...

If there is anyone else in Western PA who would like to get together for a day of sailing soon after I get these projects together?

1) Sail numbers are the "serial number" of the sail. Other than that, they have no importance.

2) The "jib bag" is a snorkle cover for the jib. Since the jib cannot be removed without taking the mast down, the snorkle cover is raised over the jib with the main halyard when storing the boat mast up. You can try using a silicone spray on the zipper, but the teeth get brittle and break from UV exposure. It looks to be in rough shape.

3) The rudder is a "PCG" - a plastic rudder that's OK - better than the original ABS or Lexan rudders, but not at stiff as any fiberglass rudder and much heavier than the EPO rudders.

4) The tiller wrap was not unusual. Gives a good grip on the slippery fiberglass tiller, but it's a bit heavy. (That trampoline in the photo is whacked. It's been painted!)
