Post subject:  rudder cam adjustment
I have a h-14, I noticed that the rudder cams wont rotate up or doun when I raise or lower the rudders.I have tried to adjust them but they still bind . Any suggestions?

Be sure that the cam is not locked in the down position. Open it. Grease it where the plunger meets the cam. Let the rudder drop against the lower casting and lower the upper arm to lock. If none of this helps... Possibly the upper casting "cam adjustment" plate or the rudder mounting holes are wrong or the cams are damaged / worn where they would catch the upper casting. If that part is bent open or is too flexible, the cam should be replaced.

Hi-
Just bought an '82 14 Turbo, my cams don't rotate so the rudders do not lock in the full down position. You said loosen the cam, how do you do that?
Can you sail with the rudders not locked in?

PS the cams look good too, they just don't budge! Will WD 40 work?

:) Inside the casting attached to the rudder blade there is a plastic screw; you have to access it from the bottom.
Having an '82 H14 turbo myself, I would guess that the plastic is hard as stone, won't move a hair if you try to use a screwdriver and the slot will just wear out.

Works great, just did it a month ago. In order to remove the old plastic bolt, I first drilled it out being carefull not to damage the threads, and then used a small propane torch to burn the remains out of the threads.

Be careful when you use heat on those old plastic screws!

The gas/smoke they put out is worse than pepper spray on the eyes! Make sure to do it in a well ventilated area (outside) and keep your face away from the smoke.

I learned this the hard way.

Post subject:  Cam update
Thought I would just post an update. I did get my cams to move with the help of pliers. I then took everything apart and reassembled cleaned and greased. They now work.
