I just acquired a 197? H14 this weekend. I coudn't find a hull number on the boat. I looked on the transoms; no luck. Is there is somewhere else to look? The sail # is 1260. The panel second from the top is a light yellow. These are the original sails.

I think it's a 70's vintage because the main traveler has the v cleats on each end and the traveler itself is the kind with the plastic inserts for bearings.

Anyone have an idea of the year?

Look for a 4 digit number stamped in the pylon. Probably the same as the sail. The boat is probably a 71. The number started going on the transom in 73 I believe. Matt ??

I am pretty sure he's right. I have a '72 and it on the front port pylon. Older than Grandma's buckskin teddy.
Madcatter XXX? Good entertainment this year?? Regatta: $50 Lapdances: $25 :oops:

I checked the numbers on the forward pylons. They read 1460. Now that I have found the serial number, and I know it is pre 1973, does anyone know what year? When did production begin on the H14's? Thanks for the help.

Production began in July of 1968.

I just picked another Hobie 14. Boat number 5852, located on the forward pylons.

Anyone have an idea what year it is? I know it is probably older than 1973.

The new numbering system came into use in 1973 (it was a new federal law that standardized hull numbers like car VINs). 5852 is one of the higher numbers I've seen, so my guess is that it's a '72.

Thanks Matt, I knew about the VIN requirement, I was curious about where 5852 fell in the production order and about what year.

So 1972 makes sense to me. I seem to be a magnet for these things, every time I look for a part on Craigslist, I find a whole boat to buy.

I'll end up with enough to have my own start :D

Hi - I am new to Hobie ownership . I have a Hobie 14 and from following these posts I think I know it was built in 1979;
(the serial number on both hulls is CCMB6691M79A-R). This boat has the dolphin striker so does that make it a Turbo model?

Also re. the serial number : what does the B stand for? and the R at the end?

Thank you

Likely "Replacement" hull.

1979
