Post subject:  Is a Dolphin Striker Needed?
Okay I am finally making my Hobie 14 a turbo YAY!!! But the only problem is that I think I need a dolphin striker if I am getting a jib but I am not sure and everyone I have asked has said no, but just to make sure I wanted to ask the Hobie Community.

Yes. That's why the dolphin striker retro-fit kits were sold with the jib kits.

Especially true if you plan to add a trapeze as well.

Okay so I guess it is kind of important because I am also putting up trap wires tomorrow and the jib. But also do you know the reasoning why I need one.

Because the front crossbar will collapse if you don't?

The dolphin striker turns the front crossbar into a truss, capable of supporting the increase in downforce caused by the addition of a jib and trapeze.

You need one? I got one! I also have a comp tip mast, a set of rails, and two of the hardest most solid uglly ass hulls you've ever seen.

I do, but If I am selling it away from the rest of the parts I have, youi'd be better off (price wise) to go on saltydogmarine.com and get one there.

The 16 dolphin striker is to wide out of the box. But if you are handy you could cut it down to make it fit..

A little tap and die work and some mild bending would be required.

The post and rod from a 16 will not work... those parts would also require a new step, so lots more money that way.

I would like to make my 14 turbo as well. What is the cheapest way around this? $680 + sail is a little steep for a $600 hobie. It would need to be safe and complete
but I it does not need to be new and/or pretty. Any ideas on interchangeable parts so that i could broaden my used parts search? thanks

The dolphin striker rod and post from a Hobie 17 can be used on a 14 with a little modification - mostly the post just needs to be cut down. You'd also need a new mast step casting, though.

whoa Matt...now that'd be cool !
do the Wave and 14 share the same mast extrusion?
no more worries about tearing up the (mast) base and step from over-rotating...although I suppose if you've added the (mast) rotation arm you'll accomplish the same thing

none the less, would be neat to allow a fully rotational mast (along with shrouds attaching at the deck lip) 8)

You misunderstood what I said, John - I'm not suggesting you use the same mast step system as the 17. In fact, to convert the 17 dolphin striker post on a 17, you cut off part of the threaded end so you can thread it on to a new 14/16 mast step casting. The original 14 mast step castings are solid - no hole for a dolphin striker.

I believe the Wave and 14 masts are the same extrusion, but Matt M. would have to confirm that.

If you want shrouds attached to the deck lip on a 14, get one of the new Euro boats. I'll live with mine attached to the sidebar for a long time before I shell out the €€€€€ they want for new boats.
