Post subject:  Need some help with H14 Hydro-foils

I didn't get any responses in the general sailing forum so I will try here:

I want to add some anti-pitchpole hydrofoils to the tips of my hulls. The H16s and the new H14s have a tang bolt that goes through the tip of the hull. The hydrofoils are bolted on to this bolt. The older H14s do not have the tang bolt going through the tip of the hull. It is further back, thus there is nowhere to attach the hydrofoil. Is it OK to drill a hole at the very tip of the hull in order to attach the hydrofoil or will this cause problems and possibly cause the tip to break off?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Danny

Post subject:  Hydro-foils

I am giving up on the foils. My tips are too small (not enough meat). If I drill a hole to support the foils, the area will be weakend too much. I believe that they will break after a few hits on the water. I was just hoping someone else had tried this and had some success.

Thanks,
Danny

Yep, they are designed for the 16, but I think you could use them on a 14. The lip is pretty strong.

Post subject:  anti pitch pole planes = danger

Personally I wouldn't put those planes on my boat. If they work and stop the pitchpole isn't the crew/skipper still going to fly forward? They look too much like knife blades for me to consider them even if they weren't illegal for racing. Learn to keep your weight further back and pitchpoles will cease to be a problem. On both the 14 and 16 there are times when you need to step back onto the stern. Once you get used to the distance it is below the rail it isn't much of a problem.

cheers
Bill

Until you hit a 8 foot wave doing twenty in a 35 knot puff upwind. Then you go FLYING forward. Thats why people install windsurfing straps on the rear hulls.
