Post subject:  Pitch-Poled!! Then off to the delivery room....

This was my Sunday last weekend:
I was sailing the Turbo by myself in winds well over my ability level between 15-25 knots on Lake Michigan, I jibed in front of the house and decided not to go in, let's do one more run...I was cruisin pretty good and woops... I pitched her. First thought, my wife will probably go into labor being our due date is Aug. 29th. and I am out here with no righting lines or bob on the mast in pretty windy conditions. I thought the Water patrol is going to make me go all the way to downtown Racine instead of on my own beach.
I remember what I read about moving to the front of the hull so the boat swings into the wind, and sure enough it did. I am pulling and pulling and the mast isn't budging. I tried pulling on the trap wire which I bungee corded to the front pylon on both side and sure enough the mast started coming out of the water and I crawled right onto the tramp and starighten out my mess and sailed in, whew. Funny how the righting process resemmbles a waterstart in windsurfing.
Anyway, I de-rigged and not more than 1 hour later my wife's water broke...my son was born Monday morning. I guess I learned a lot in a couple days, but what fun it was!

Wow, thats a great story. Just wait until he is old enough to go out with ya. I took my nephew out last week on my getaway (he is 3) he was scared to death at first and would not budge an inch from the center of the tramp. But after a while he warmed up to it some. He absolutely will not go to the front tramp yet, I think he is afraid of falling through or something. Next year I think he will be all for it. Congrats on adding a future Hobie Sailor!
