Since my H14 turbo lost its jib, I've been sailing without it. I've noticed that when the wind is really blowing it sails just as fast or faster than with the jib on AND with MUCH less tendency for the leeward bow to dip and dive. Have other sailors experienced this? Why so? |

keeping the power back by removing the jib would reduce the down force on the bows i would guess,allowing them to drive higher, but would be very surprised if it is quicker without the jib (assuming you have the weight balanced and sails trimmed optimally) |

Not so sure that the jib adds that much power- it is pretty small, but it sure makes tacking easier  ! I have noticed that she doesn't push the lee bow nearly as hard when I sail as a uni-rig. I usually don't need to trap out way behind the tramp. Probably has a lot to do with the 14 being designed initially without the jib and the turbo kit being at first an aftermarket modification. Also, they're pretty small and not nearly as bouyant as a 16.Dave |

with the low volume of the hulls even a small jib will greatly increase the tendancy of the bow to bury. I must also say that I find it tacks just fine as a uni rig

I think this discussion is highly dependent upon available wind. I have found that in 15 knots+ of wind, I should just always leave the jib furled and the power of the main will keep me going at essentially the same speed. At 5-10 knots and below, the jib helps a decent amount, especially with tacking and accelerating out of those tacks. If you are forced to go dead downwind (certain harbor entrances and channels), it can help provide some sail area, albeit minimal. Between 10-15 knots of wind, the line becomes blurred and I generally just sail with it, since otherwise my hands feel empty. |
