Hey I am new to this forum and just got my dads hobie 14. He got it used in 1970-71 and I am trying to find out the year it was built for no other reason than I am curious. I looked around the rudder area and there are no markings there or anywhere else on the hulls. The sail number is 8997 and I believe it to be original. I don't know if the sails are numbered in any way.
I grew up sailing this boat with my dad and am looking forward introducing it to a my kids and hopefully it will last another gereration.

Thanks in advance!

FYI the search button is your friend :D

Ok if you know it's that year then look at the front castings there should be a 4 digit number there you go.

And the sail number as no bases to the number on the tramp

What year did you buy it? (That would help.)

Just on the number, I'm going to guess it's a 1970.

It was so long ago I forget when but it was a long time. I bought it a year old and my wife seems to remember 71 or 72.
Thanks

Hi, we'll I just bought a Hobie 14, serial number 2123. Does that make it earlier than 1970? She still goes fine ! Bit leaky ... So, how do the 4 digit numbers work?

The short answer is yes - it's older than 1970. But how much older is tricky, especially in the early years.

The four-digit serial numbers were just that - serial numbers. Serial numbers up to around 6000 were used until the modern numbering scheme, mandated by federal law, was implemented in 1973.

In the early years, there was some correlation between sail number and hull number (but it's not exact). From old photos, you can guesstimate which numbers go with which years.

But basically, the lower the number, the older the boat.

I don't think Hobie Cat started with 0001, either. The lowest number I've seen/heard of is over 1000.

Thanks ! Appreciate the answer. Well, the boat's almost as old as me then. I guess my wife can now call it "Noah's raft" (she's not much into sailing). Me, I'm loving it. ps : Sail number is 13108, but probably not original.
